Animal Feed Additive Approvals

The European legislation on animal feed provides a framework for ensuring that feed does not present any danger to human or animal health or to the environment. It includes rules on the circulation and use of feed materials, requirements for feed hygiene, rules on undesirable substances in animal feed, legislation on genetically modified food and feed, and conditions for the use of additives in animal nutrition.

Regulation (EC) No. 1831/2003 on additives for use in animal nutrition sets out detailed rules for the approval of feed additives. The directive outlines the requirement for an application to be submitted to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), for review and approval, before feeds can be successfully marketed.
