ACS Meeting 2008
New Orleans
April 9, 2008

Bernadene A. Magnuson, Cantox Health Sciences International, will be presenting on Nanoscale materials in foods – existing and potential sources.

" Advances in nanotechnology are resulting in numerous promising applications for improved food production, processing and storage. The safety of nanoscale materials in foods has become an increasingly important question, both in the US and worldwide. Nanoscale particles in foods can be derived from naturally occurring food components, or may be engineered using materials that are not endogenous to foods. To assess the risk of these materials, both the potential hazard and exposure must be considered. Although oral exposure to nanomaterials has not been as intensely investigated as other routes of exposure, recent studies using nanotechnology to improve uptake of nutrients and bioactive components illustrate that absorption and internal dose can be altered, potentially changing hazard. Current knowledge gaps and research needs will be discussed. Efforts to facilitate international collaboration and information exchange are underway to ensure acceptance and utilization of the many benefits of nanotechnology."

Don't miss this opportunity to learn from the experts. Join us in New Orleans for this outstanding technical program.  For more information visit:  ACS EXHIBITIONS

The Netherlands
April 18-19, 2008

At this congress Wendy Pearson, Cantox, will speak about the “Usefulness of glucosamine, chondroitin and other nutraceuticals for the prevention and/or treatment of arthritis in horses”. This seminar will provide an overview of what is known regarding the use of nutraceuticals in horses, with a particular focus on glucosamine and chondroitin salts.  There has been a substantial amount of new research into these products over the past 2 years, and new information is now available regarding their application to cartilage protection.  Information will be presented which will allow horse people to answer many longstanding questions: what is better, glucosamine sulphate or glucosamine HCl? Is chondroitin sulphate bioavailable and does it have a different role than glucosamine?  What is an appropriate dose of these products for horses? What does the research say about if or how it works? This seminar will answer some of these important questions, and glucosamine / chondroitin research will be put into context with some other related nutraceuticals with respect to their ability to provide anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective activities to equine joints.
